    Deputy Director

The American Law Institute (ALI) is the leading independent organization producing scholarly work that seeks to improve American law.  Founded in 1923 and headquartered in Philadelphia, the ALI's membership is 4,000 lawyers, judges, and law professors from all areas of the United States as well as some foreign countries, selected on the basis of professional achievement and demonstrated interest in law reform.  Through a careful and deliberative process, the Institute drafts and then publishes Restatements of the Law (current Restatement projects include Employment Law and the American Law of International Arbitration),  model statutes such as the Uniform Commercial Code and the Model Penal Code, and Principles of various legal fields that have included Corporate Governance, Family Dissolution, and Aggregate Litigation.  These influence courts, legislatures, and legal scholarship.  Additional information about the ALI is available on the website: www.ali.org.

The ALI Director, Lance Liebman, is also a Professor at Columbia University and lives and works in New York.  The Deputy Director, who reports to the Director, is thus the senior person in the Philadelphia office.  The Deputy Director is responsible for overall management of the staff, business operations, publications, contractual relationships, meetings, membership functions, and general administration.  The Deputy Director must understand the ALI's substantive work, attend most project meetings, work closely with the professors who serve as Reporters, and understand and coordinate the Institute's institutional operations, including meetings of the 60-member Council and the work of the various committees that deal with such subjects as project selection, membership, budget, and outreach.  The successful candidate should have proven leadership ability, management skills including financial experience, an understanding of the American legal system, and a commitment to law reform.  An undergraduate degree and a law degree are required.
